The Nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) is an African is a medium-sized antelope species. Males have a striking and colourful coat, including spiral-horned males. They have a dark brown or greyish coat with vertical white stripes on their body. The legs may have yellowish patches, and they often have a white chevron-shaped mark on their face. Females are smaller, with a reddish-brown coat and similar markings but lack horns. They are known for their agility and elusive nature, often remaining hidden in thick cover.


Distribution: Native to Southern Africa.


Size: A medium-sized antelope with males being larger than females.            

Weight: 220 – 280lb / 92 – 126 kg

Shoulder Height: 40 – 42’’ / 1 m 

Horns: Only males have long, somewhat lyre-shaped horns, sweeping back and up from the face in a single spiral. The black coloured horns have beautiful ivory-coloured tips.

Habitat: Inhabit dense bush and woodland areas, feeding on leaves, fruits, and grasses.


Habits: Nyala are primarily crepuscular, being most active during dawn and dusk. They are social animals, often found in small groups or herds, typically led by females. Nyala rely on dense cover for protection from predators. They are cautious and agile, using their keen senses to detect danger and swiftly escape if threatened. Males are more solitary, especially outside the breeding season.


Hunting Tips: It requires approximately 3 days to hunt a good Nyala. Nyala are most active in the early morning and evening. The technique for hunting and stalking Nyala is very similar to Bushbuck. (See Bushbuck)
