BUFFALO

The Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer) is a large, cow-like, dark brown to black herbivore native to sub-Saharan Africa. Known for its robust build and sweeping horns, it inhabits savannahs, grasslands, and woodlands, often found near water where it wallows. Its hide colour can vary, with some having lighter patches. Highly social, they live in herds for protection against predators.

Distribution: Southern, Eastern and Central Africa with limited populations in Western Africa.

Size: Are among the largest bovids (members of the cattle family) in Africa.

Weight: 1,500 – 2200lb / 700 – 1,000 kg

Shoulder Height: 3.3 to 5.6 feet / 1.0 to 1.7 meters.

Horns: both sexes have horns. The boss is a massive shield-like structure that covers the forehead of the buffalo and merges into the base of the horns. The horns themselves are usually wide and curve outward and then slightly inward, forming a shape that resembles a broad, sweeping arc.

Habitat: Savannahs with edible grass near water.

Habits: They are social animals, often found in herds ranging from a few dozen to several hundred individuals. They are primarily grazers, feeding on grasses and reeds, and are most active during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning and late afternoon. Cape buffalo are known for their strong herd dynamics and protective behavior, especially towards calves. They can be aggressive when threatened, making them one of the more dangerous animals in Africa.

Hunting Tips: Hunted walk and stalk. Can be tracked and often shot at very short distances. Shot placement is important. Always use a heavy calibre. When stalking be mindful of wind direction. Very dangerous when wounded, be prepared for a charge and. Always have a backup shot ready.
