BLESBOK, COMMON
The Blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi) is a medium-sized antelope native to South Africa, recognized by its reddish-brown coat and distinctive white blaze on its face. The name "Blesbok" comes from the Dutch word "bles," meaning "blaze," referring to the bold white marking on its forehead.
Distribution: Native to South Africa and are primarily found in the central and southern regions, including the Free State, Gauteng, and parts of Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape. While historically their range was more restricted due to habitat loss, conservation efforts have helped reintroduce them to private game farms and reserves, expanding their distribution. Now introduced to Namibia.

Horns: Both males and females have horns, curving slightly backward and outward before turning upward and slightly inward. They are heavily ringed at the base.
Habitat: They thrive in open grasslands and semi-arid areas.
Habits: Diurnal, grazers, feeding primarily during the day in herds. They prefer open grasslands, where they feed on short grasses. Social by nature, they often gather in large groups and rely on group vigilance to detect predators. Blesbok are territorial during the breeding season, with dominant males marking and defending their areas. They are also migratory, following seasonal changes in vegetation.
Hunting Tips: When hunting Blesbok, approach slowly at an angle, giving the impression that you are walking past them rather than directly towards them. They tend to be skittish in open areas, so use natural cover like trees or bushes to stay concealed. Early mornings and late afternoons are ideal hunting times as they are more active then. Aim for a clear side shot to ensure a quick, ethical harvest. It's also important to be patient and avoid rushing the stalk, as Blesbok have excellent vision and are quick to detect movement.
